Nattering Gnat: Nat circled the point fourteen times before settling on it
Nattering Gnat is a large square abstract painting dominated by a commanding navy double-loop that sweeps across the canvas with confident, continuous motion. Behind and around it, a lively collection of geometric forms in yellow, orange, mint green, lavender and warm beige create a colourful, layered backdrop, with a vivid red accent at the top drawing the eye upward. Scattered dots punctuate the surface like visual exclamation marks, and fine stray lines cut across the composition as if Nat changed direction mid-thought.
The interplay between the bold circular gesture and the softer geometric forms gives the painting a wonderful tension, structured and spontaneous at the same time.
